Yes, generating free backlinks can be a tedious and time consuming process but it is worth the effort in the long run. There are literally thousands of ways of generating free backlinks but I am now going to list three of my favourite methods.

1. Article marketing – Write articles and submit them to the leading article directories. Leave a link back to your site in the resource box. The articles need only be 60% unique so you do not have to write something completely new every time. Ezinearticles is the best and most trusted article directory on the web. DO NOT simply copy and paste content from your site as articles because they will reduce the ranking of site.

2. Social bookmarking – Admittedly, the benefits of social bookmarking have diminished in recent years but it is still worth doing as a part of your SEO strategy. I would definitely recommend submitting to the leading directories like Digg, Stumble Upon, Technorati and others. It is up to you how many you can bother to bookmark on.

3. Blog commenting- This is often overlooked by many webmasters but for me it was one of the easiest and best ways to generate free backlinks from sites related to the content to your. Simply go on other blogs related to the content of your own, leave a comment and then place your site url at the end of the comment.

My final tip for generating free backlinks is to do it little bit but often. You are not going to generate thousands of links overnight so be patient. You should implement Google Webmaster Tools for you site so you can keep a track of the number of backlinks to your site.
